Details: The Silicon Valley Chapter of the High
Technology Crime Investigation Association today announced that
its third annual "High Technology Criminal Case of the Year"
award will be presented to members of law enforcement and the
private sector on Wednesday, March 24, 1999 at the above time
and location. This year's award will honor a joint criminal investigation
between various federal, state, and local law enforcement officials.
Included are the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Internal
Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division, the U.S. Customs
Service, the state Department of Justice (Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement
and Violence Suppression Unit), San Jose Police Department, the
Los Angeles Co. Sheriff's Office, and the United States Attorney's
Office. In addition, Cyte-M, Inc., a private sector security-consulting
firm will also be honored.
This investigation began in August of 1997 and resulted in the
indictment of multiple suspects including Lamar Douglas Alexander
and Richard Lamar Hamilton. The on-going investigation, code name
"Treezuck", focused on high tech cargo theft and culminated
in the arrest of the suspects for conspiracy to commit an armed
hijacking of a well known international shipping company's tractor-trailer
they believed contained approximately $8,000,000 worth of Intel
Pentium microprocessors. Federal charges include violations of
Wire Fraud, Money Laundering, the Hobbs Act, and Interstate &
International Transportation of Stolen Property. Both suspects
are violent and their operation is believed to have controlled
at least 80% of the cargo thefts occurring at the Los Angeles
International Airport during the time that they were active.
Intel Corporation, Seagate Technology, Western Digital Corporation,
Sun Microsystems, Quantum Corporation, Conway Freight Systems,
and other international shipping companies will also be recognized
for their participation in the operation.
